Following the announcement of implementation of the Carequality-CommonWell interoperability collaboration, I was fortunate enough to catch up with Micky Tripathi ( @mickytripathi1 ) to discuss this development and put it in context. Micky is bullish on interoperability, both over the near term (the next 12-18 months) and the long term.

Health plans, accountablecare organizations (ACOs), medical homes, and other risk-bearing entities are at a critical juncture: they must achieve “value” at a time when healthcare is facing enormous challenges. The following is a guest article by Adam Sabloff, CEO and Founder, VirtualHealth.
Many facets of healthcare remained in a state of flux at the close of 2022, as care practices that started during the pandemic found their way into the mainstream, and enthusiasm for new data sources and interoperability outpaced the realities of implementation. Be sure to check out last year’s New Healthcare Truths of 2022 ) 1.
The importance of collaboration cannot be overstated, and the numbers prove it: projections show that the population covered by accountablecare organizations (ACOs) will reach 105 million by 2020.
Second, a fast, scalable, and interoperable platform with the operational tools required to act and execute opportunities to improve patient and financial outcomes. We do that through an interoperable data platform that uses advanced analytics to shape strategies, inform decisions, and facilitate actions. Chief Technology Officer.
The new company spun out of healthcare interoperability leader 1upHealth three months ago and secured $13M in funding, co-led by Craft Ventures and Obvious Ventures. also added industry leaders to its advisory board and launched numerous use cases for health insurance plans, pharmacies, and healthcare providers.
A second post suggested ONC is raising the bar for interoperability and shifting its focus to “routine interoperability” beyond recognizing health systems that “sometimes” send, receive, find, and integrate data. Indiana-based Deaconess Health System is implementing KeyCare to support 24/7 urgent care.
As vaccines continue to roll out, requiring meticulous record-keeping and specialized shipping and storage conditions (and that's to say nothing of the ongoing critical need for PPE and other lifesaving equipment) nowhere are interoperability and data visibility more important than with healthcare supply chains.
How Artificial Intelligence and Other Tech can Help Even when it comes to electronic health records (EHRs), an area where many countries are making strides , the issue of interoperability remains. This precludes the effective, timely, and secure transmission of patient data. Understanding processes before automating them is essential.

Mo Weitnauer, Chief Product Officer at MRO ACOs Impacted by Change to eCQM One of the biggest regulatory changes ahead directly impacts AccountableCare Organizations (ACOs) and their quality reporting processes. ACOs will soon transition away from Web Interface to electronic clinical quality measure (eCQM) reporting.
AccountableCare Organizations can also report quality measures from their EHRs to meet reporting requirements for participating eligible professionals. For example, eligible professionals may submit through a data-submission vendor or submit reports generated from their certified EHR technology directly to CMS. Learn more at HIMSS.
ACOs with a single EHR were able to avoid interoperability challenges and better coordinate care in real time. Those with multiple EHRs had to use phone calls and fax to share data for care coordination. OIG conducted interviews with staff and providers at the six ACOs about how they use health IT and the challenges that remain.
Then they brought up the nebulous interoperability, which they couldn’t describe it at all. Most of the research I’ve seen around interoperability is pretty garbage. We have to create accountablecare organizations. Now what are they doing? We have to coordinate patients. How do we treat those patients?
This makes the patient-provider interaction more human and engaging, because providers spend less time clicking through EHRs on screens and more time connecting with and caring for patients — whether the appointment is in-person or virtual.
AccountableCare Organizations and Patient Centered Medical Homes are introducing new ways for us to provide better care not only for individuals but for entire populations. Health IT vendors are working hard to build the kind of technology that will realize true electronic interoperability.
Challenges and Limitations of Remote Monitoring for Heart Failure Patients Technological barriers Remote monitoring technologies often face challenges related to interoperability and compatibility with existing healthcare systems. Integrating various devices and platforms can be complex and may require significant technical expertise.
