But as we talk about it, more and more HIE organizations have started to use it and the concept has been embraced by many. Lindsey Ferris, DrPH, Senior Interoperability and Public Health Director at PointClickCare – I think we’re at the very early stages. I think it’s kind of HIE plus certain new characteristics.
As the next phase in the evolution of interoperability, SDC allows for the secure and near real-time sharing of health data between devices at the point of care, regardless of the manufacturer. Traditionally, we think about interoperability as HIEs (health information exchanges), but in 2024 I expect to see new models emerge.
Because penalties for information blocking – that is, any practice that interferes with access, exchange, or use of electronic health data – are tied to the definition of EHI. The expanded definition of EHI now includes virtually any health information tied to an individual that is used in decision making.
The IHE IT-Infrastructure committee continues to produce new and improved specifications for HIEinteroperability. Health IT Vendors should review this supplement and determine if the capabilities within meet their interoperability needs. Cross-Community Patient Discovery (XCPD) Health Data Locator and Revoke Option - Rev.
Joint technology solution will deliver an integrated data interoperability platform that streamlines data acquisition and delivers clean, actionable, and intelligent data. Fueled by Diameter’s technology, Availity will create the nation’s preeminent data acquisition and interoperability platform.
A good definition of blockchain is: “A blockchain , [1] [2] [3] originally block chain , [4] [5] is a continuously growing list of records , called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography. [1] I have been spending time as cardiologist, consultant, and caregiver for a seriously ill family member.
Following the announcement of implementation of the Carequality-CommonWell interoperability collaboration, I was fortunate enough to catch up with Micky Tripathi ( @mickytripathi1 ) to discuss this development and put it in context. Micky is bullish on interoperability, both over the near term (the next 12-18 months) and the long term.

We talk a lot about sharing data and how it will improve patient outcomes and interoperability, but do we talk enough about how to do it safely? Healthcare is going to be rapidly advancing as patient data becomes more interoperable and effectively used across traditional organizational boundaries.
For example, the definition of EHI and how it applies to various data isn’t clear and how the 8 exceptions apply is also confusing to many. The organizations do suggest they support HHS’ efforts to “advance health data exchange and interoperability while advancing health equity for all.”
Increasing healthcare consolidation of hospitals has exacerbated the problem of lack of interoperability. There remain many opportunities for technologies to assist in achieving true interoperability. Today a broader definition may be applied: “the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.
High-quality, reliable data is crucial to getting most things done in healthcare, especially for healthcare interoperability. We’ve made some great strides in improving interoperability, in no small part due to the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA).
Our conversations with healthcare organizations (HCOs) has not been all that insightful either as their PHM definitions are as disparate as the vendors. So if analytics is the engine, what is the steering wheel, what are the tires, is HIE the gas tank, or the fueling station? Yes, we are looking beyond referrals!

These perspectives reinforce each other as she works to improve the regulatory landscape shaping security and interoperability in her role at CHIME overseeing congressional engagement efforts focused on effective use of health IT. Five years from now, Leslie expects that cybersecurity and interoperability will be much improved.

There is renewed discussion, much like back in January, around the need to go beyond testing just the FHIR Resource 'interoperability'. Testing Interoperability is not easy, and there are struggles with getting this first level testing done right. A 'system' in the broadest of definitions. CommonWell could do this.
Definitely a superior solution, but also is going to take some development work by vendors to switch to this new approach. #Together4Health2022 @DirectTrustorg [link]. John Lynn (@techguy) August 22, 2022. My favorite piece of this is the move to FHIR updates versus the current batch file updates.
We definitely can’t take credit for this phrase…that belongs to Carrie O’Connell. He remarked that providers actually have a great appetite for data! And as Dr. Schoch clarified, “I don’t need more data…I need the right data, in my workflow.”. It’s Time for “Common Sense Medicine”.
I’m going through an HIE implementation right now with a local HIE here in Georgia. The problem with interoperability and intraoperability is that those files become convoluted quickly. All of them have a lot of work to do around interoperability and parsing the right data set for the right patient at the right time.
By focusing on medical definitions of success (generally expressed as HEDIS measures), the program medicalized social problems and failed to explicitly recognize the significant role that social determinants play in the health of our communities. Did this happen everywhere? This was a minority of PPS. But it happened.
A number of policies will need to be established in an XDS Affinity Domain in order to ensure effective interoperability between Document Sources and Consumers. It does not apply to XCA, as XCA uses the term "Community" in a rather similar but more expansive. an XDS Affinity Domain -- derived from the word "affinity".
