Ten-year-old Lundyn Cox of Mustang, Oklahoma learned by text message that she’d been kicked off her softball team because of her Type 1 diabetes. The text was sent to her mom, Brandy Skoropowski, by the coach. Lundyn was a “liability” to the team, the coach later told Skoropowski. “It’s not a safe sport for her. On a 104⁰ day, she could slip into a diabetic coma,” a text said, according to Skoropowski.

Health Costs for People with Diabetes is 3.6 Times More than Average

A new study confirms what many with diabetes have known all along – that staying healthy comes at a steep price. Researchers with the Health Care Cost Institute found that health care costs for people with diabetes on private insurance plans was about 3.6 times more than health care costs for those without diabetes. Health care spending was highest for adults with diabetes in the 55-65 age bracket, but the second-highest spending was for children with diabetes, ages 0-18.

FDA Panel Recommends Expanded Use of CGMs

On July 21st, an FDA Advisory Committee panel convened to consider an application by Dexcom to relabel the G5 continuous glucose monitor (CGM) as a device suitable for use in making treatment decisions. Later that afternoon, the Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition broke the news on its Facebook page that the committee had voted for that labeling change.
