Dollar General Store ended up paying over $275,000 because it wouldn’t allow an employee with diabetes to treat a bout of hypoglycemia with orange juice. An Americans With Disabilities Act complaint was lodged in 2012 by Linda Atkins, who had been fired by the retail chain. The lead sales associate at the Dollar General Store in Maryville, Tennessee, Atkins was covering her cash register and working alone when she grabbed a bottle of orange juice from a nearby refrigerator and paid the $1.69 pri
When the term “artificial intelligence” – better known as “AI” – was initially coined, it was thought that humans (carbon based life forms) had “real” intelligence while the best a machine’s intelligence (to the extent they had any) could get was “artificial”. As I work with companies that are leading major machine learning, algorithms, and AI initiatives I’m convinced that we’re ushering in a new golden age of AI but one that might need some terminology refinements.
Registries have traditionally been viewed as static repositories of data to be reviewed in a summary fashion after a predetermined time period. The expanding need for drilled down relevant data has led to the development of creative sophisticated data analytics technologies. We have witnessed the transformation of registry data collection which now includes curation of relevant raw data ranging from medical images and pathology slides to genomics.

The Kaiser Family Foundation has released another report surrounding ACA figures, and the results are astounding. I’ll be attending IBM’s World of Watson 2016 in Las Vegas next week. I’m looking forward to hearing whether government and industry are collaborating any better as a result of the passage of The Cybersecurity Act of 2015. The Cyber Act by itself doesn’t really imply (or require) that citizen data (or any other kind of private data) be made accessible across institutions.

When it comes to healthcare under the Affordable Care Act, many points of coverage can often be an afterthought. QHPs, or “qualified health plans,” are required to fulfill ten “essential benefits” under the ACA’s mandate. Among those ten is pediatric dental care. However, the QHP need not itself provide pediatric dental care. Instead, a plan does not lose “QHP” status if a stand-alone dental plan offering pediatric dental care is also offered.

It’s Halloween weekend, 2015 and I’m traveling to New Orleans with a friend to attend a music festival. Something is wrong with me, I know that; I don’t feel well. My girlfriend and I have noted I get up at night to pee, and I’m thirsty beyond belief and very tired. My trip to New Orleans becomes the most fun and most dangerous trip of my life. Using the bathroom every hour, drinking too much too often, dehydrated beyond belief, sleeping not much at all.
In this excerpt from The Savvy Diabetic – A Survival Guide , diabetes activist Joanne Milo reminisces about diabetes treatment strategies and tools from yesteryear: I immediately started on insulin injections, initially administered by Dad, an engineer but secretly a wannabe surgeon. He was outstanding at giving painless shots. But, given the psychological thinking of the time, the doctor thought it was “unwise” for a father to give injections to a prepubescent daughter.

There has been some pushback against labeling the Medtronic 670G an “artificial pancreas”. Even Jeffrey Brewer, the current president and CEO of Bigfoot Biomedical and the former president and CEO of JDRF, has soured on the term. In an October 6th, 2016 Facebook post, he wrote why Bigfoot Biomedical won’t be calling their coming automated pump system an artificial pancreas: “In retrospect, those of us who came together in 2005 to drive development of automated insulin delivery systems shouldn

Last week, the FDA announced approval of the Medtronic 670G, which is considered by some ( including Insulin Nation’s editor) to be the first pump system worthy of the label of artificial pancreas. However, the 670G still requires a fair amount of user input, and there are other artificial pancreas pump systems in clinical trials that may offer the promise of even more automation of blood sugar control.
Comentario.
During a webinar held shortly after the FDA announced approval for the Medtronic 670G, JDRF chief mission officer Dr. Aaron Kowalski discussed why he believes the pump system merits the label of an artificial pancreas. “When you start dosing insulin automatically, that is the first artificial pancreas,” Dr. Kowalski said. JDRF, along with the Helmsley Charitable Trust and the National Institutes of Health’s Special Diabetes Program, spearheaded the philanthropic giving to fund research into arti

For people with Type 1 diabetes, enjoying Halloween while keeping blood sugar levels in check can be daunting. Yes, it’s absolutely true that people with Type 1 can “eat anything”, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s healthy to eat large-quantities-of-Fun-Size-Kit-Kats-anything. Candy is a big part of Halloween, but it’s not the only part. According to an Atlantic report, trick-or-treating wasn’t even a national tradition until the late 1940’s; that means candy is the newcomer to Halloween.
Americans aren’t the only ones pushing their lawmakers to have government-sponsored healthcare programs cover the cost of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). A UK petition for such coverage is slowly making progress in gathering sufficient signatures for the measure to be debated by UK lawmakers. The effort is being led by Jamie Reed, Labour Party member of the House of Commons representing Copeland in northwestern England.
By many estimates, some 20 percent to 40 percent of people with diabetes will experience kidney damage (nephropathy) because of diabetes. Normally, nephropathy is detected through urine tests that reveal abnormal amounts of albumin, a protein made in the liver. There may be a better way, however. According to a Healio report , researchers have found that children with Type 1 diabetes possess two proteins that can serve as biomarkers for nephropathy long before the condition can be detected by a
