'If you’re a baseball fan, then nothing makes you smile in winter like the phrase “pitchers and catchers”, which is the signal for the start of Spring Training. Baseball has a long tradition of welcoming players with Type 1 diabetes, including two Hall of Famers: Catfish Hunter, who won over 200 games and 5 World Series championships, and Ron Santos, who smacked 342 home runs during his career.
GE Centricity in owned practices Clinicians in the driver’s seat — “I allowed and encouraged them to make the selection.” IT as consultants, not owners Lack of ROI in HIEs Patient engagement obstacles “We never intended to chase the dollar.” Thoughts on MU – “I don’t think it achieved near what they thought it would.” When Sheri Rawlings started as CIO at San Juan Regional more than 4 years ago, the EHR picture in the physician community was dire.
My daughter just turned twenty-one a few months ago. Watching her plow through a plate of Queso Espanoles (with Sangria) at one of her favorite spots near school, you’d never believe that as a toddler she couldn’t get near anything even resembling dairy. At about two years old, a single piece of buttered popcorn found between the sofa cushions just about closed up her throat.

2014 was my first full year with HIMSS in consumer health and full of opportunity. In January, I went to my first Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It was as massive as I heard, full of large screen TVs, many curved screens, drones, health trackers, etc. I spent most of the time at the Digital Health Summit – a well organized event including patient panels, fitness health device startups, wellness programs, and a demonstration of a exoskeleton.
It’s not surprising that telehealth and telemedicine top health system CIO’s IT priorities. According to the Advisory Board, offering “direct to patient telemedicine” is one of the most significant trends driving healthcare consumerism, but “most provider organizations are behind on the adoption curve”. 'I wanted to get a tattoo, but people discouraged me from doing it because of my Type 1 diabetes. The naysayers told me that we didn’t heal well enough, that we got infections too easily, that there was just too much risk. But then I began noticing people with diabetes-related tattoos. Some people were getting them on their wrists in place of MedicAlert bracelets.
The approximately 50,000 Americans who have filed tax returns using incorrect government-supplied data for their Affordable Care Act premium tax credit do not have to file amended returns, the Treasury Department announced. The IRS will not demand additional money from taxpayers who underpaid their 2014 income taxes because of wrong information they received on Form 1095-A, officials said.
De-Identification is a Process, and one that can be done right or WRONG! The argument 'for' or 'against' use of de-identification is a Red Herring. What the arguments are actually about is the point that a Process can be done badly. There should be no doubt that any Process can be done badly. Even a simple process like filling a glass of water can be done badly, even resulting in human harm.
'As I write this, I have been the parent of a child with Type 1 for 56,328 hours. According to the Malcom Gladwell book Outliers , after doing anything for 10,000 hours, I should be an “expert” at it. Even with my “expertise,” however, diabetes can still confuse me just as it did on Day 1. I have learned a few things along the way to Hour 56,328 that might be helpful for other parents of children with diabetes, be they “experts” themselves or white-knuckled beginners: 1.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. 'Our first honeymoon was everything you could want in a romantic getaway – a pressure-free and luxurious vacation in Paris. Our second honeymoon was anything but. It happened when our older son, Jack, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 11. The first night, as I stayed by Jack’s hospital bed, I thought I would never be able to take care of him or teach him how to care for himself through this complicated disease.
'Quick Hits. An article published by FoxNews.com says that researchers have developed a modified insulin that independently adjusts blood-sugar levels that creep too high for people—well, mice—with diabetes. The experimental study from the University of Utah Health Sciences injected mice with the “smart” insulin, formally named Ins-PBA-F. To create the insulin, they attached a “glucose sensor” molecule, phenylboronic acid (PBA), on normal insulin molecules, said Dr.

'I’ve found that living with an insulin pump is a lot like being in a marriage. Like most thriving partnerships, it requires a solid investment of time, energy, and patience. It’s taken me some trial and error to stay saddled in a happy, functioning relationship with my pump. From my experience, I want to share a few tips: Make one-on-one time. Setting aside time to program and reassess the carbohydrate ratios, basal settings, and alerts of your pump can relieve a lot of pressure in daily life.
'While you might be going through the same day-in, day-out process to keep blood sugar levels in check, there’s a diabetes technology race afoot. Diabetes tech companies are trying to outdo each other with the latest pump, continuous glucose monitor (CGM), or app to help people with diabetes regulate blood glucose levels. Competition sparks innovation, and innovation means better treatment options for people with Type 1.
'It’s tricky during your child’s teenage years to strike the right balance between parenting and letting go. This is especially true when the teenager in your life has Type 1 diabetes. Endocrinologists have come to understand that the teenage years are a critical period for a young person with Type 1 to establish good daily diabetes self-care. This means that it’s critical to give teens the space to make their own choices, and mistakes, in their blood sugar management.
'Bennet Dunlap, an online diabetes community activist, is using social media to champion the International Diabetes Federation’s 2015 Spare a Rose, Save a Child campaign. The idea is simple: instead of buying a dozen roses for Valentine’s Day, buy one fewer and donate the value of that flower to help children with diabetes have access to insulin and testing equipment.

'To make a splash in an insulin pump market dominated by Medtronic, Tandem designers seemed to take Apple’s slogan to heart to think different when they created the t:slim insulin pump. These designers focused on creating a touch-screen user interface that was more user-friendly than existing pumps on the market, and they wanted the pump to look more like a smartphone or mp3 player than a medical device; one of the biggest selling points of the t:slim was that it was shaped to be about 25% thinn
