'If people with diabetes had a quarter for every dumb thing someone says to them about diabetes, they’d never have to pay for insulin. The Insulin Nation staff have gathered some of the most ridiculous things people say about diabetes in one video compilation. Sit back and enjoy the ignorance, and then share this video with others for a “laugh so you don’t cry” kind of catharsis.
As you may have heard, healthcare wrapped up the month of April on a real high. The Federation of State medical Boards (FSMB) adopted new policy guidelines for the safe practice of telemedicine. This means that, finally, states now have a basic roadmap for ensuring that patients are protected in this fast-changing healthcare delivery environment. It also means that all states can utilize clear definitions and principles to guide policies governing the use of telehealth.
Are you familiar with the Health Datapalooza ? What exactly is a palooza? The Urban Dictionary defines palooza as "an all-out crazy party; partying at one place with a ton of people like there's no tomorrow." You don't have to be a data junkie or an informatics geek to have fun at the Health Datapalooza. Health Datapalooza is a national conference focused on liberating health data, and bringing together the companies, startups, academics, government agencies, and individuals with the newest and
'Dustin McGowan. In baseball, pitchers have been known to sneak a few things into their back pockets or onto their bodies to help with their pitching performance. Headlines were made early in the 2014 baseball season when New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda was thrown out of a game for smearing pine tar on his neck to “doctor” the ball. Most famously, a knuckleball pitcher named Joe Niekro was caught red-handed with an emery board in his pocket which he used to scuff up baseballs.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
'In my practice recently I saw a very bright and talented woman about my age with Type 1 diabetes. She told me how, years ago, she had been accepted to medical school and elected not to go because she knew that, with the intensity of the studying and crazy schedule of hospital rotations, she would not be able to manage her glucose levels properly. I was so saddened to hear this, for I know so many physicians with Type 1 diabetes, and know the value their perspective brings to endocrinology.

'My son’s face said it all. I looked away, feeling guilty. I had just yelled at him while trying to get him to do a chore. Fifteen minutes of cajoling, reasoning, and arguing had gotten nowhere and I had lost my temper. Now, staring at his tear-stained face, I tried to look for signs of low or high blood sugar, but I couldn’t find a hint of either. I checked him anyway; he was low.
'If you’ve ever been given glucagon, chances are you weren’t focused enough to see how it was reconstituted. Considered the counterweight hormone to insulin, glucagon is typically only given in emergency situations to quickly treat extreme lows. It’s an invaluable tool to help people with diabetes, but not a convenient one. Glucagon quickly degrades with water, so it usually is kept in powder form and must be quickly mixed with water during an emergency, says Doug Baum, CEO of Xeris Pharmaceutic
'Hospitals are supposed to be places to heal, but they can also become hotbeds of infection if proper rules of hygiene aren’t being followed. Unfortunately, insulin-dependent people with diabetes are some of the most at risk of danger when these rules break down. In March 2014, 4,427 people with diabetes in the Long Island area received notice that they may have been exposed to bloodborne pathogens because staff at the South Nassau Community Hospital reused insulin pens on multiple patients.
'Photo Credit: Bobby Quillard. In May, Austin Basis had a good kind of problem. The actor, who has Type 1 diabetes, was all set to attend his local Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) gala out in Los Angeles, but work got in the way. His television show, Beauty and the Beast , was picked up for a third season, meaning he had to uproot to Toronto to film new episodes of the popular sci-fi/romance series.

'Adults have long grown accustomed to having teens fix their technological problems, so perhaps it shouldn’t surprise us that UK researchers let teens use artificial pancreas systems at home for a 3 week stretch. In April 2014, researchers with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation UK announced the success of a study that allowed teens with Type 1 diabetes to test artificial pancreas technology in real world conditions.
'For once, Type 1 diabetes should be on the tip of everyone’s tongue. A massive new study released in May 2014 has documented that the rate of Type 1 diabetes in U.S. children has increased by 21% over 8 years. That means we’re seeing a 2.8% to 4.0% rate increase in new T1 diagnoses annually. And for the first time, researchers are beginning to notice that the rate of new T1 diagnoses is increasing quicker in African-American and Hispanic communities, according to Dr.
'In August 2013, the Ontario provincial government changed their health policy to restrict test strip reimbursement for people with diabetes. Those who are not dependent on insulin therapy will only be reimbursed for 400 test strips a year, while those dependent on insulin therapy will be limited to 3000 strips a year. The change, policymakers said, was evidence-based, but the Canadian diabetes community has protested the restriction as a penny-pinching move that could adversely impact thousands
'Recently, I stopped by a bookstore to browse. As a budding dietitian and someone who also has a bit of a weight problem, it didn’t take me long to find my way to the diet and fitness section. Although I shouldn’t have been surprised, I was taken aback by the overflowing wall of books on various diets and schemes to lose weight. With so many choices in reading material, it’s no wonder people have such a difficult time figuring out what to eat!

'Choosing an infusion set and insulin pump can be a frustrating and challenging process, especially when you don’t know all the possibilities of what’s out there. Few of us are told that there are over a dozen options. Instead, we are often forced to choose something and make it work rather than find something that works for us. For me, the initial leap from multiple daily injections to pump therapy seemed overwhelming, and I didn’t think to ask about my options.
'A Neuropathy Tricorder? The Boston Globe is reporting that Massachusetts-based Neurometrix is now selling a device in Japan that can externally monitor neuropathy damage. According to Neurometrix’s website , the DPNCheck is a handheld device that can quickly measure biomarkers that indicate neuropathic damage. The device is being billed as a diagnostic tool to help catch the early stages of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and keep tabs on how neuropathy might be progressing.
'If the squeaky wheel gets the grease, then it’s up to the diabetes community to make more noise in 2014 and 2015 on important policy issues that could impact their health. If there ever was a time for advocacy, this is it. Change is afoot on how the government delivers health care, and it’s important that people with diabetes have a seat at the table.
'A good friend of mine, Chris Klebl, won a gold medal in the 10K cross-country sit ski event at the 2014 Paralympics in Sochi; his win shocked spectators as he wasn’t expected to beat the Russian favorite in the event. It was a fitting outcome for a career built on determination, one that inspires me as a diabetes endurance athlete. Chris learned how to sit ski 11 years ago after a friend took him out for the first time.
