'President Barack Obama has been touting his Affordable Care Act as a way to help Americans manage treatable illnesses. In a speech on the new law at the White House yesterday, he and a speech-goer inadvertently collaborated to shine a spotlight on diabetes, one of the most manageable conditions covered under the new law. During a speech at the Rose Garden, Obama smoothly paused in his prepared speech to steady Karmel Allison, a pregnant T1 woman standing behind him.

'Starting college means being on your own for the first time, for better or worse. It’s great to feel independent, but you can also feel alone. I remember meeting my floormates in college and knowing right away that we were going to be great friends. We excitedly shared all the things we had in common, like our taste in music and movies. But diabetes was something I felt I had all to myself.
'For 35 years, the City on a Hill that represents the possibility of untold riches from insulin pumps has glimmered on the horizon, tangible but unreachable. To be sure, several companies among more than 30 pump-maker start-ups have made tidy profits, either from developing today’s pump technology or from selling their ideas and products to larger companies.

The real value of on-site clinics is being debated in benefit departments and C-suites across the country. The bottom line is, in fact, the bottom line: can you make the math pencil? While the benefits are obvious (improved access, increased productivity), so are the downfalls: Building and staffing a clinic requires huge initial and ongoing capital investments; It requires people to be at work to be treated, Part 1: This is counterproductive when trying to prevent the spread of illness; It requ

Telehealth is amazing, right? See a doctor online, right over your web cam or smartphone, right away. As in when you actually need to see a doctor. It really is pretty amazing that this is possible? But, of course there?s a ?but?. Not all telehealth is quite that good. There are a lot of telehealth vendors out there that rely on a call-back model rather than immediate online and mobile video visits.

'The study tracked T1 patients using the Medtronic Veo, a pump similar to the Medtronic MiniMed 530g, pictured here. An Australian study has found that smart insulin pumps, which shut off insulin delivery when low glucose readings are detected, can dramatically lower the risk of hypoglycemia, according to a HealthDay report. Researchers report smart pump users had 4 times fewer bouts of moderate to severe hypoglycemia than those using standard pumps over the course of half a year.

During pregnancy, women with Type 1 diabetes must contend with a host of health problems, including higher rates of preeclampsia and a heightened risk of hypoglycemia. Rates of preterm delivery and fetal malformation also are higher for T1 mothers than for women without diabetes.
'Medtronic’s Paradigm Insulin Infusion pump has run afoul of U.S. health regulators in 2013. In June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a Class 1 recall for the pump, warning of the possibility of over-delivery or under-delivery of insulin because of a manufacturing flaw. And in September, the FDA sent a warning letter to Medtronic chastising the pump-maker for multiple quality-control violations at the Northridge, California manufacturing plant where the Paradigm pumps are made.
'People with Type 1 diabetes know all about being overwhelmed. It’s a never-ending assault of carb-counting, food-weighing, label-reading, blood glucose-testing, treating highs and worrying about lows! It takes a lot of work to stay inspired, even for someone who has made it his mission in life to inspire others with diabetes. Ever since my diagnosis, I’ve been keeping myself extremely busy by competing in Ironman triathlons, helping to start a new company that keeps the T1 community infor
