Commentary. Some people don’t understand why people with diabetes get upset at the price of insulin. They see insulin for sale at a relatively reasonable price in Walmart and don’t see the problem. What they don’t know is that these Walmart insulins just don’t perform nearly as well as the more expensive insulins, and that gap in performance can have a very negative effect on the health of people with diabetes.

Under the banner of Afrezza 2.0, MannKind is moving with all deliberate speed to recover the momentum built around inhalable insulin when it was introduced in 2014. That momentum dissipated after the company turned worldwide marketing rights over to Sanofi shortly after FDA clearance in June of that year. Sanofi severed ties with Mannkind in 2016 amid slow Afrezza sales.
Commentary. No sooner did news break that the FDA had approved the Medtronic 670G did debate start over whether it deserved to be labeled an artificial pancreas. I wanted to provide my thoughts on why as the editorial director of a diabetes news publication, I felt comfortable using the term for this hybrid automated pump-and-CGM system. (And I should note that I love that we as a community are so quick to debate such points.).
Opinion. They say the first step to getting yourself out of a hole is to stop digging. At Sanofi, company officials may believe the first step is to fortify and refortify the hole. This month, Sanofi filed a patent lawsuit against fellow drugmaker Merck & Co. to block the latter company from releasing a biosimilar insulin that is supposed to copycat Lantus, according to a FiercePharma report.

Commentary. This week, Emil and Rodica Radita are on trial in Calgary for the first-degree murder of their 15-year-old child, Alexandru (“Alex”), who had Type 1 diabetes. Prosecutors allege that the Raditas withheld insulin and starved the child until he was 37 pounds, according to a CBC report. A novel treatment meant to stop Type 1 diabetes by increasing the number of T cells in the body is being given special attention by the FDA. The treatment, called CLBS03, has recently been granted Fast Track status by federal regulators, a designation which speeds up the approval process. The CLBS03 treatment clones T cells from the patient to combat Type 1 diabetes.
