The FDA reported that Dexcom has issued a voluntary recall for their G4 Platinum and G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGM). The company has undertaken the recall because of reports that the G4 and G5 audible alarm systems are not sounding. The FDA is treating this recall as a Class I recall, meaning device failure could cause serious injury or death.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of four when I registered an astounding blood sugar reading of 880 mg/dl. I spent 2 weeks in a coma after that, and I don’t remember anything from that hospital stay. After those two weeks, my family and I were packed up and sent home with a dietary chart and a blood glucose meter. For 20 years afterwards, my blood sugar levels were erratic and my body was weak.

In 2015, Emma Dillon and Emma Netherwood were having a hard time explaining diabetes to their own children with Type 1 as well as other children. The two moms from Stockport, England decided to create a children’s book on life with diabetes called Ivy and Iver Take on Type 1. Their children, the aforementioned Ivy and Iver, were diagnosed at the same hospital, and a diabetes nurse paired the families together.

In a recent episode of Outlander , we barely get to meet someone with diabetes before we learn she is going to die.
