The healthcaretechnology world is ablaze, on FHIR. New proposed standards for interoperability are being established to allow health systems the ability to share information and facilitate patient access to data. Specifically, in large part through a structure known as FHIR.
The following is a guest article by Shannon West, Chief Product Officer at Datavant Since the dawn of electronic medical records, American healthcare delivery systems have traced a winding path toward the dream of seamless and timely health data interoperability. Rate limiting is not inherent to the FHIR standards.
In a recent interview with Healthcare IT Today , Aidan Lee, Director of the Certification Program at OntarioMD , and Matt LaDuke, Director of Products, Integrations, and Service Management, shed light on the evolving landscape of electronic medical records (EMRs) and the state of interoperability in the healthcare sector.
An EHR system needs to make a 360-degree view of patient data accessible in a secure manner that can be made available using standard interfaces like FHIR (Fast HealthcareInteroperability Resources) APIs for structured data exchange and DICOM for imaging.
We have made a lot of strides in healthcare looking for ways to recenter the patient in our decisions, inventing technologies like AI to reduce the clinician burden on our staff, and so much more. In order to truly improve healthcare, we need to have seamless interoperability and data sharing between different healthcare providers.
So what are these key skills and qualifications and how have they evolved with advancements in healthcaretechnology ? We reached out to our incredible Healthcare IT Today Community for their thoughts and the following is what they had to say. Being academically strong greatly contributes to a healthcare leadership mindset.
Interoperability: TIEs facilitate interoperability between different healthcare systems, enabling seamless data exchange and collaboration. Interoperability Standards: The lack of standardized data formats and terminologies can hinder interoperability and data exchange.
After 12 straight months of hype, clearly, we didn’t anticipate how central AI would be to the narrative and how much (or how quickly) it would change the healthcaretechnology landscape (at least in theory). It certainly is growing, but FHIR has not picked up the steam we had hoped for in 2023. Sadly, he was wrong. is drafted.
This year marked my inaugural voyage to HL7® FHIR® DevDays , alongside my Redox colleagues, Autumn Ike , and Mike Paetz. This expert community built around FHIR is as collectively passionate as they are incredibly knowledgeable. A few things seemed to proceed as expected, including the adoption of FHIR standards across the EHR market base, but much was rather unexpected. Antiquated methods will be kicked to the curb in favor of APIs, FHIR, nationwide networks, patient authorized retrieval, and more.” The short answer from all of them was “not exactly.”

With information trapped in dead-end silos, virtual health consultation data is left out of population health strategies and other initiatives likeCMS data sharing and interoperability requirements. Let’s say it clearly: in healthcare, data is just another word for insight. A strong foundation for the future of healthcaretechnology.
The industry desperately lacks information fluidity, and with that a shared, consistent understanding across providers of how and when their patients are interacting with the healthcare system. Zus is building a healthcare common ground.
While the key components of privacy (administrative, uses and disclosures, individual rights, and general security) are all necessary today, I would put privacy, security, breach – and relevant 21 Century Cures Interoperability topics – all together and make sure everyone handling any type of sensitive information be subject to these rules.

It’s worth noting that HL7 has also introduced FHIR® (Fast HealthcareInteroperability Resources), a standard with a more modern communication structure that is currently in a trial use stage. FHIR has similar problems to HL7 in that the content communicated using FHIR is still highly variable and specific to each health system.
Check out our community’s HealthcareInteroperability and Healthcare Cloud predictions: Sufian Chowdhury, CEO at Kinetik Conquering interoperability will unlock efficiencies. Healthcare spending continues to climb throughout our country, even as healthcare outcomes show little or no improvement.
The following is a guest article by Ryan Sullivan, Product Manager at Oystehr The promise of seamless data exchange has been the holy grail of enterprise healthcaretechnology for decades. While significant progress has been made, the path to true interoperability remains complex but there are promising developments on the horizon.
