Practice Fusion, a San Francisco-based EHR vendor with a controversy-rich history, has agreed to pay $145 million to settle allegations that it engaged in a kickback scheme designed to increase opioid prescriptions and issues with their meaningfuluse EHR certification. This had been […].
This past week, a bipartisan group of House representatives – all of whom were present on the call – introduced the Protecting Access to Post-COVID-19 Telehealth Act. Wolf also pointed out that the recent bloom in telehealth is rooted, in part, in the government's electronic health record incentive program and meaningfuluse.
Those highest-threat “premier-level” consumer health service organizations would be UnitedHealth Group/Optum. The second chart illustrates that most providers offer a patient portal — that’s largely owing to the near-universal adoption of electronic health records and the MeaningfulUse access point of a portal.
He became the president of the GE Centricity user group, and his group practice won a HIMSS Davies Award for its innovative and effective use of its EHR. The Harlow Group LLC. In this interview, Rawlings provides her honest take on MeaningfulUse — and why it’s much more challenging for community hospitals, and the strategy she employs when introducing change. So many of the patients who would use this technology are younger and they’re not chronic patients. There’s no value in it for them.
They should 1) empower proactive health and wellbeing management; 2) foster a sense of community and wellbeing; 3) be enabled by digital technology and behavioral science; 4) meaningfully use data to improve outcomes; 5) enable new, innovative ecosystems.
Patient Centricity Any clinician, staffer, or group should be easily assigned to any patient’s care team, immediately creating an intimate information-sharing ecosystem (not unlike a social media chatroom) focused on the patient and the workflow. For many clinicians, EHRs have actually been a disservice, a major factor in burnout.
Power to the patients continued to surge throughout the year, capped off by the ONC with the information blocking’s limitation on the scope of electronic health information (EHI) lifted as of October 6 , granting patients full real-time access to our medical records, despite 10 major healthcare industry groups’ opposition.
Looking back to 2010, the health IT initiatives of that time consisted of getting up-to-speed as quickly as possible about MeaningfulUse and helping to move health systems and clinical practices away from paper and analog processes to electronic and Internet-enabled technologies.
It is worth noting that the SaMD efforts are based on the principles articulated by a group of medical device regulators from around the world (IMDRF) which chartered a working group to look at SaMD; the IMDRF document was unanimously approved by its management committee and was adopted by the FDA. And so that's why we started interoperability years before meaningfuluse required it. And so, finally, we had a CEO give a talk at our users group meeting who said that his CIO came in and handed him a piece of paper and said, "Sign this, I need some software." They were afraid to.
We spoke a bit about the TEFCA — the interoperability framework proposed by ONC under the 21st Century Cures Act — which is intended to create a framework of trust that will ensure that healthcare records can be transferred and used in creation of longitudinal records for everyone. For many, the delay of Stage 3 of the MeaningfulUse program evoked a collective sigh of relief, providing a much-needed extra year to focus on the challenging requirements for patient engagement and interoperability. Collecting data such as patient allergies or side effects appears a simpler use case on paper.

I have an incredible amount of respect for the people running the group, but I also believe that the momentum at ONC right now is just wrong. My plan was to just go quietly into the night, but looking through the recently-released MeaningfulUse 3 requirements convinced me that I really ought to put this out there.
The impact of the work of ONC therefore can’t be overstated, despite the single thread with which ONC is sometimes conflated: the 1st five years of HITECH and the meaningfuluse incentive programs. The alignment of a dedicated group of people to a shared goal (better health for millions of people) is powerful and exhilarating.
There were several other chapter meetings, chapter leader institute, meaningfuluse meeting and the Nursing Informatics Institute, all well delivered HIMSS events. In June, I had the opportunity to speak at the Northern Ohio HIMSS conference on the Value of Patient Engagement.
According to the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) Stat poll, by 2018 patient portals were employed by about 90% of the surveyed providers. . healthcare providers’ initiative or, should we say, their need to comply with MeaningfulUse. In fact, the wave of patient portal deployment wasn’t caused by patients’ interest.

This task won’t be solved by any single organizer or sector; the AMIA calls on providers and health systems, Health IT vendors, and policy and advocacy groups to join the effort. The American Medical Informatics Association began a project to reduce patient documentation to 25% of its current volume by 2025. Follow the money.

As an anti-tank gunner (MOS: 0351), I was part of a group that trained for the most unfathomable scenarios. Quite a bit of this is inspired by ONC’s MeaningfulUse, telehealth reimbursement models, and new CMS programs mandating effective change. Ultimately, the CMS is driving the strategy for the industry to execute.
Decentralization vs. Centralization in Healthcare IT There was a time when consolidation, aiming to eliminate shadow IT groups, was one of the larger drivers in IT, Nigrin says. For several years, CIOs focused on implementing EHRs and meeting MeaningfulUse requirements, she says.

As we more closely integrate our many efforts using the infrastructure of EHRs, we will be looking at some of the challenges presented in areas such as information exchange and coding. This is only the first of many steps we plan to take to help providers. Learn More at HIMSS and Online.
This defines the purpose of a security Audit Log, the uses of this audit log information, including how it is used to provide patients with accounting of disclosures. This specification has been leveraged by many regional initiatives including in the USA the MeaningfulUse Stage 2.
